Curfew remained in force for the second day today in major towns of South Kashmir after five persons were killed in firing by security forces in Shopian.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation after receiving specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in Zainpora area of Shopian, they said.
Officials said Bilal Ahmed Kuchey had allowed the terrorists to use his house as a hideout and also provided them with high-end mobile phones.
"Hiding militants sprayed bullets at a police party, resulting in the death of one civilian on the spot. Another critically wounded civilian succumbed to injuries in a hospital," a senior police officer said.

The JeM terrorists also carried 'armoured piercing steel core ammunition' which can go through Level 3 protection bulletproof vehicles that police and other security forces use, they said. The ammunition was in large quantity and could have posed a grave threat, top police officials said.
